Imagine a classroom where students are motivated, engaged, and eager to learn. A place where students feel supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. As educators, we strive to create this kind of positive learning environment, but it’s not always easy. That’s where positive reinforcement comes in. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool that can help you create a positive and supportive classroom environment that fosters learning and success.
You might be asking yourself, what is positive reinforcement? Positive reinforcement is a teaching strategy that involves rewarding or praising students for their positive behavior. It is based on the idea that positive reinforcement can increase the likelihood of students repeating their desired actions or exhibiting desired behaviors. When students feel motivated, valued and recognized for their efforts, they are more likely to engage in behaviors that lead to success.
Positive reinforcement can be delivered in many ways. Using tangible rewards such as stickers, certificates, or classroom privileges can be effective forms of positive reinforcement.

One example of positive reinforcement is using Behavior coupons, like the ones above, in your classroom. These coupons provide students with visuals of their preferred positive reinforcement reward. Behavior coupons can be used for individual students or the whole class to earn for positive behavior. These behavior coupons provide students with motivating reward choices with little to no cost for the teacher.
I have found it most beneficial when students have a say in the reward they are working towards. When students feel like they have a say, they are more invested in the process and more likely to take ownership of working towards desired behaviors. One way to determine what motivates students is a reinforcement assessments. These assessments give students a variety of choices to determines what their top reinforcers are.
Another example of positive reinforcement in the classroom is using a token economy system. A token economy system is put in place when frequent positive reinforcement is needed for a child to be most successful. Some examples of what can look like below.
Token Economy is a positive behavior reward system. It is used to reward students for appropriate behavior, work/ task completion, and anything else you feel your students should be rewarded for. I use it all day long in my classroom. My token economy system is key to motivating the most struggling and challenging students to complete work and behave appropriately. Token economy is a more intensive form of positive reinforcement in the classroom.
Positive reinforcement can be achieved in many ways in the classroom. It is a powerful tool when used correctly to help create a positive and supportive learning environment for your students. Specific praise (like the notes above), rewards and recognition motivate and encourage students to reach their full potential.
