First Then Boards for Work Task Completion

Are you currently using a visual schedule or First/ Then Board with some of your students that find it hard to complete tasks? If the answer is no, I am here to try to convince you to change that answer to YES!

You might be wondering, what is a First/Then Board? First/ Then Boards are a visual representation of a task that is less preferred that needs to be completed, and then a preferred reward or event that happens after the task is complete. In short, the “First” is a less preferred activity, and the “Then” is a preferred activity.

One of the key benefits of using First Then Boards is the way they break down tasks into manageable steps. For individuals with cognitive or behavioral challenges, the overwhelming nature of a complete task can often lead to avoidance or feelings of frustration. However, by visually breaking down tasks into smaller, more achievable steps, First Then Boards provide a clear roadmap to completion.

The visual nature of First Then Boards also plays a crucial role in increasing task completion. As tasks are represented visually, children can easily understand and internalize what needs to be done. By being able to see what they earn (the “Then”) after completing a less preferred activity, it is naturally motivating.

First Then Boards also help in establishing a sense of consistency and predictability in daily routines. It takes the guessing out of what is next or expected. This process is done by consistently changing out the first/then visual cards. In the image above, the First Then Board is inside a file folder with choices on one side and the visual boards on the other. Velco is attached to the folder and to the back of the cards to make it easy to change out First Then activities.

In order for First Then Boards to to be fully effective, the child must be motivated by the “Then”. Allowing choice in choosing what they are working towards is key. An easy and effective way to do this is giving 3-5 choices to choose from. When those rewards or activities get repetitive, you can switch them out for new ones with the child’s input!

First Then Boards can be a game changer when it comes to work task completion! They are naturally motivating and provide a concrete visual for what is expected.
